A. 3 Discourtesy is not a legal offence, and it does not excuse assault and battery. Give its reason.
Ans - i. Discourtesy, such as being rude or impolite, is considered bad manners but it is not a legal offence.
ii. The law does not punish a person for being impolite or disrespectful. However, assault and battery — which means physically attacking someone — is a serious legal offence.
iii. So, even if a person is rude or does not behave respectfully (discourteous), it does not give anyone the right to respond with violence.
iv. The law protects individuals from physical harm, not from rudeness.
V. Therefore, discourtesy may be morally wrong, but it cannot justify or excuse an act of assault and battery.
A.4. If you were the liftman in the story, what would you have done differently? Why?
Ans- i.I would have controlled my emotions and not let the rude behaviour affect me. Staying calm helps avoid unnecessary trouble.
ii. I could have said, “Sir, it would be nice if you said ‘please’.” This polite reminder might have made the passenger realize his mistake.
iii vI would not have pushed or assaulted the passenger. Violence is never a solution and only creates legal problems.
iv. As a service worker, I would remember that my job requires dignity and self-respect. I should behave professionally, even in difficult situations.
v. By showing courtesy even when faced with rudeness, I could have set a good example for others and upheld the values of politeness and self-control.
