XI 4.2 The Rising of the Moon- Theme

 A. 1. The theme of 'The Rising of the Moon'-

Ans- The 'Rising of the Moon' is a One Act play written by Lady Gregory in the early 1900s. The theme of the play is nationalism, rebellion and identity.  It is a political play based on the relations between England and Ireland. It is a story of an escaped prisoner, ( Stranger, Ballad Singer)  and a police officer, Sergent torn between duty and patriotism.
The play deals with the hope of the Sergeant to arrest the run away prisoner so as to seek promotion and the reward of a hundred pounds. The prisoner, an Irish nationalist with his intelligence and charm manages to raise the love for the nation in the mind of the sergeant, who is an Irish man but serving in the British government. The Sergeants love for his nation surpasses his duty and the prisoner escapes promising to return the favour of freedom in  his country.
Ultimately ,at the end of the play, nationalism wins, which is more ethical than the duty.
