About the poet poem and title-

'Indian Weavers' is a short and meaningful poem written by Sarojini Naidu(1879-1949). She is an Indian poet, political activist and feminist.  She is called " Nightingale of India" for her lyrical poetic style.

The poem is  taken from her famous collection  "The Golden Threshold", published in 1905.

The title of the poem is apt for the theme as it shows cycle of life and  hard work of Indian Weavers.

The Theme-

Indian Weavers is a short poem, where the poet talks about three types of garments - (Robes, Marriage veils, and  Shroud) that the Weavers weave at three particular times of the day. i.e. At break of day - early morning/ Dawn, At fall of the night- late  Evening time, the moonlight chill- Cold night / Dusk. Each stanza of the poem represents three important events of human life birth, adulthood, and death. The colors mentioned in these stanzas are very significant as they indicate the moods related to the events. for e.g. Bright color like blue, purple, and green indicates happiness, and white indicates sorrow, silence, lifelessness, dullness, and colorless life. So, The type of the poem is philosophical.

The type of the poem is philosophical.

The language and poetic devices-

The language is very simple to understand by the reader. The rhyme scheme of the poem is "aabb ccdd eeff" respectively and the rhyming pair of each stanza is as follows- day-gay, wild-child, night- bright, green- queen, still-chill, and cloud-shroud.

The tone of the poem is conversational/dialogue where the poet( Sarojini Naidu) asked questions to the Weavers and the weavers was given information about their work using the symbolism of cloth & color.

To enhance the poetic appeal, the poet used alliteration, interrogative, metaphor, simile, , tautology, and repetition figure of speech.

for e.g.  "blue as a wing of a halcyon wild"

Smile-

The blue color is directly compared with wings of the halcyon bird.

"Weavers, weaving at break of day"

Metaphor

'break of day' is indirectly compared to 'childhood'.

Special features-

Imagery and symbolism are literary devices used in this poem. Imagery means to create a ' mental image' in the mind of the reader.

Symbolism is the special feature of this poem. The poem's main symbolism is that the 'threads'' of a person's life are weaved by 'destiny' or 'fates' which are represented by the poem 'Weavers'.

There are three stanzas , four lines each and every second line of each stanza, Sarojini Naidu asked questions to Indian weavers about their work.

Message and values-

The message of the poem is that we all have to pass through three stages of life i.e. birth, adulthood, and death and nobody is an exception to the rule. So every stage has its own mood, color& shades of life so enjoy your life.

Opinion about the poem -

From my point of view, this poem has a philosophical value. It teaches me a lesson that 'life and death are two sides of the same coin'. We should enjoy both sides and shouldn't get bothered about death.

Or

I like this poem very much because it has philosophical value.
