Poem - Small Towns and Rivers -
Mamang Dai
Small towns always..... Seeking a land of fish and stars.
1. Write down the list of natural elements mentioned into extract.
In Mamang Dai's poem Small Towns and Rivers, the natural elements play a crucial role in evoking the essence of her homeland and its connection to nature. Some of the natural elements mentioned in the poem include:
1. Rivers – Symbolizing continuity, life, and memory.
2. Hills – Representing the geographical and cultural identity of the region.
3. Forests – Highlighting the lush, verdant landscape.
4. Sky – Suggesting vastness and freedom.
5. Rain – Reflecting renewal and the cycle of life.
6. Wind – Evoking movement and change.
7. Birds – Representing life and connection to nature.

i. Protecting nature and the environment is our responsibility. So,
Plant more trees to improve air quality and provide shelter for animals.
ii. . Reduce waste by reusing and recycling materials.
iii. Save water and energy by using them wisely, like turning off taps and lights when not needed.
iv.. Avoid plastic and use eco-friendly products.
v. Keep surroundings clean by not littering and organizing clean-up drives.
vi. Protect wildlife by not harming animals or their habitats.
Vii. Spread awareness about the importance of nature and sustainable practices.
Small actions by each of us can lead to a big positive impact on the environment.
4. Name and explain the figure of speech in the following line-
The river has a soul.

The river has personified here for poetic effect.

5.Compose a four line poem on "The River" in free verse.

It keep us civilization grow

2.1 Song of the Open Road - Walt Whitman

Ans-
I. The poet, poem & title-
Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist.He is often called as 'the Father of Free Verse. His major works were "Leaves of Grass" and "O Captain! My Captain!"
The poem 'Song of the Open Road ' is taken from his famous collection 'Leaves of grass'.
The title 'Song of the open road' is metaphorical. 'Road' is indirectly compared with 'journey of life'. It also indicates freedom, mobility and optimism tone
ii. Theme-
Freedom, Joy and Optimism are the major themes of this poem. Throughout the poem, the poet encourages the readers to be true to themselves and live a free life.
ii The language/ poetic devices used in the poem-
The poem is written in free verse as the lines are unrhymed and of varying lengths. The poet used Metaphor, Personification, Inversion, Tautology, climax, Paradox, Transfer Epithet, Alliteration, Repetition, etc . For e.g.
"Still here I carry my old delicious burdens"
Transferred Epithet - Epithet 'delicious' is transferred to 'burdens'
iv. Special Features -
The poem is written in free verse and in the form of a monologue. Caesura - (splitting the lines using comma) and Parentheses - {}are special techniques used in the poem.
It has an optimistic tone. It is a motivational and inspirational poem.
There are four stanzas in this poem. The first stanza contains only three lines while the other three stanzas contain four lines of verse.
v. The message, values, morals in the poem-
The poem conveys the message that while taking a decision of our life we should not come under any constellations, society and family pressure. " Lead your own life with your own challenges and believe in yourself" message depicts from this poem.
vi. Opinion-
I like the poem for its timeless appeal. It drives me to set out and be free while leaving my worries behind.

I like this poem because it helps me to make decisions about my life.
