4.2 The Rising of the Moon
Character Sketch -
The Man-
The second important character in this one- act play. He has many identities like the man, escaped prisoner, ragged man , poor ballad singer and freedom fighter. He entered as a poor ballad singer but in fact he was an escaped prisoner. He introduced himself to the Sergeant as a poor ballad singer, disguised as a ragged man, dark hair, dark eyes smooth face and five feet five height. He was an intelligent man with a patriotic passion for his country Ireland. He was a brave freedom fighter and wanted to save his country from Britishers. He accepted many challenges for his own country. Many times he gave the clues to the Sergeant for his original identity but the Sergeant couldn't identify it. He changed the approach of Sergeant continuously by singing ballads in front of him. At the end of his efforts, he successfully brings out the patriotism within the Sergeant and gets successful to run away from this place.
Sergeant -
The Sergeant is the main and complex character in this one act play. The story moves around him. He is brave, smart, simple, obedient, and honest but fooled easily. He is patriotic and takes risks for his country. He is also the loyal officer of the British government desires to arrest the escaped prisoner. He joined the force to support his family. He wants to catch the escaped prisoner to get prizes and promotions but the man persuades his mind and changes him as a patriotic person. The Sergeant realizes the man as a prisoner but he lets him go. His changed reaction surprises the audience. The author wants to show this inner struggle/ conflict highlights the tension between the British rule and Irish resistance through Sergeant.
