2.7 She Walks In Beauty-Appreciation
2.7 She Walks in Beauty- Lord Byron
Appreciation -
Title-
The poem 'She Walks in Beauty' is written by the Lord Byron in 1815. He was a British great romantic poet and satrist.
The poem is about the external as well as internal beauty of the woman.
The title "She Walks in Beauty" doesn't mean that the woman is walking beautifully or that she is simply beautiful. It says that she walks "in beauty", meaning that beauty surrounds her, making her magnificent.
Theme/summary/gist of the poem-
This poem is a short lyrical poem celebrating female beauty. The poet describes an 'unnamed woman' who is exceptionally striking. The poet describes not only her external appearance but also her inner goodness which makes her so captivatingly attractive. The poet Byron compares her to the night sky describing her serene and perfect beauty. Although the poem is generally thought to be about love, the poet never actually declares his love for this lady.
Poetic style/language, poetic devices-
The poet uses simile, metaphor, Alliteration, Personification, and Antithesis figures of speech to describe the perfect beauty of the woman.
For e.g. Antithesis- ‘And all that’s best of dark and light '. Two opposite ideas 'dark' and 'light' are presented to each other for poetic effect.
The poem is a short lyrical poem consisting of 18 lines that are divided into three stanzas. Each stanza is sestet (six lines stanza). The rhyming scheme of each stanza – ababab. The poem is written in rhyming couplets.
Special features/novelties/focusing elements-
The special feature of the poem is that generally the day is used to express beauty but the poet uses the 'starry night' to describe the perfectly balanced beauty of the woman. The description of her inner and outer beauty is as follows-
The lady's beauty- a cloudless start skies
Her Hair- wavy and black
Her eyes - a perfect blend of light and darkness
Her smile- soft, calm, eloquent
Her mind - at peace with all below a heart
Her face - expresses thoughts serenely and sweetly
Your opinion about the poem-
I like the poem very much and I am truly inspired by the poet’s perspective on perfect beauty . As we know that 'Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder'.
