About the Poet, Poem, and Title-
Edgar Albert Guest was born on 20th August 1881 in England and died on 5th August 1959 in the United States. He began his writing career in 1885 when he was fourteen. He was known as the “People’s Poet” for his simple style and optimistic tone of writing.
About the Poem-
‘Have You Earned your Tomorrow’ this poem was first published in the Detroit Free Press in 1916.
About the title-
The title of this poem suggests verbal questions to the readers to rethink the treatment that they are giving to others. It gives a hint that we must help people around us it confirms our bright future. In short, in Hindu mythology, our Karma tells us “Invest today and get its return Tomorrow”.
The theme-
This poem is a motivational, inspirational, and didactic poem. It motivates the readers to do good deeds for the others. We should give up negative actions and negative thoughts. The poem is also helpful to us in the process of ‘self-introspection’. We may bring positive change in our behavior and may become better citizens with the help of self-introspection. According to the poet our small good deeds are enough to guarantee our better future.
The language/ poetic devices used in the poem-
The style and tone of the poem is simple and optimistic. The poet used the interrogative technique to create awareness among the readers to improve their interpersonal relations.
The rhyme scheme is “aabb ccaa ddee ffaa”. The major figures of speech are Interrogative, Antithesis and Synecdoche and minors are Alliteration, Inversion, Metaphor,Paradox, Oxymoron, etc. An example of Synecdoche is – “ Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said”.
Special Features-
The poet uses an interrogative style to elaborate his ideas of goodness. There is interrogation in eleven lines of the sixteen-line poem. Every stanza has three interrogative questions except the third stanza. The sound ‘ay’ is repeated in each stanza. The poem consists of four stanza that is separated into sets of four lines or quatrains.
Message, values, and Morals in the poem-
The clear message of the poem is one’s life is meaningful only if it is useful for humanity at large. ‘As you sow, so you shall reap” As per this proverb our deeds calculate our tomorrow.
Your Opinion about the poem-
This poem is motivational and optimistic. We must act and think for others. I learnt from this poem that “Today’s good investment is tomorrow’s gain” so develop interpersonal relationships and keep humanity.
