Read the following extract and complete the activities given below: 

A.1.  Complete the following statements.

(a) The Abbot of Aberbrothok placed a bell on the Inchcape Rock because......

Ans -it warned sailors about the dangerous rock and saved their lives.

(b) The mariners were grateful to the Abbot of Aberbrothok because .......

Ans- he cared for their safety and protected their ships from danger.

(c) The result of the thick haze that covered the sky was that........

Ans- the sailors could not see the Inchcape Rock.

(d) The Rover, in frustration, pulled his hair and cursed himself because.......

Ans- his ship struck the Inchcape Rock and was about to sink.

A.2. Arrange the events in the correct sequence.

Ans- Correct Order: (b) → (a) → (d) → (c) → (e)

(b) The Abbot of Aberbrothok had placed the bell on a buoy on the rock.

(a) The waves were so small that they did not move enough to ring the bell.

(d) Ralph bent over from the boat.

(c) There was a thick haze spread over the atmosphere.

(e) Sir Ralph cursed himself in despair and tore his hair.

Correct Order: (b) → (a) → (d) → (c) → (e)

A.3. "Jealousy is the most incurable defect." Justify with the help of the poem The Inchcape Rock.

Ans-

i. In the poem, Sir Ralph the Rover was jealous of the good work done by the Abbot.

ii. The Abbot had placed a bell on the Inchcape Rock to save the lives of sailors. Sir Ralph did not like the Abbot's popularity and kindness.

iii. Out of jealousy and selfishness, he cut down the warning bell. His action put many sailors' lives in danger.

iv. Later, during a storm, Sir Ralph's own ship struck the same rock because the bell was missing. He lost his ship and his life because of his evil deed.

V. The poem teaches that jealousy makes a person cruel and selfish.Jealousy finally destroys the person who has it.

Therefore, the poem proves that jealousy is the most incurable defect because it leads to one's own downfall.

 A.4. Name and explain the figure of speech in the following line -

'On the deck the Rover takes his stand'

Ans- Inversion 

The words order is not in correct prose order. The correct prose order is ,'The Rover takes his stand' on the deck'. 

A.5. Compose four poetic lines on 'Evil deeds'. 

Ans- Evil deeds may bring us pain,

They return to us again.

Choose the path of truth and right,

Goodness makes our future bright.
