4.2 To Sir, with Love

Q.1. Give a brief character-sketch of Denham.

Ans- Denham is one of the boys in Braithwaite’s class. Like all others, he too is initially dismissive of Braithwaite and is rude and disrespectful towards him. He is particularly aggressive and bad-tempered. Braithwaite’s patience and tolerance transform Denham into a mature, young man who learns to be respectful of others and takes up responsibility. This can be seen from his ability to host the Students’ Council report and supervise its proceedings. While hosting the Students’ Council event, he refers to the other senior girls as ‘Miss’ proving that he has transformed into an honorable young man. He is a trained boxer and enjoys athletic activities. He is a natural leader, who enjoys influence over his classmates and is especially looked up to by the other boys of the class. This is made clear from the support he receives from his criticism of the P.T. class when the other boys cheer him from the audience. He is assertive and confident as he presents his report and is blunt(insensitive), but respectful in his questioning of the need for the P.T. class. In his exchange with Miss Phillips, Denham is not only clever and assertive but also determined in his argument, even though Miss Phillips represents an authoritative figure.

2. Fernman brought comic relief in the Student's council program. Write your answer in 50 words.

Ans- When Fernman was called to present his report, he made a signal on the off stage and Welsh and Allison brought a skeleton which was appearing like gallows. The skeleton was handling a spring which was Fix in its skull. It was urgently revolving at the end of a code. When he brought on a screen that's skeleton on the stage it brought some comical relay to everybody present in the auditorium. But in next few minutes, this treatment of serious matter which was being presented disappeared when Ferman spoke in a clear and precise voice. Fernman had an excellent dramatic sense. Then very calmly he disguised the subject of physiology. He told that it was a female skeleton and it can be easily proved. But, he at the same time told that he could not give an assurance of whether she was Chinese,French, and German or whether she was black or brown skin coloured or mixture of both. With this he said that his class has concluded that all people were same, the trimmings might be different but the foundations were all laid out according to the same blue print.

Q. 5.Answer the following questions:

(4.3 Around the World in Eighty Days )

1. Give Reason: Passepartout seized Fogg by the collar and dragged him along with irresistible force.

Ans- According to Phileas Fogg, he had lost the bet as he had reached five minutes late (8.50 pm.) The date of the bet is 21 st December, Saturday, at 8.45 pm. that day he closed himself in his room. The Next day in the evening he went to meet Aouda and apologized for being unable to provide her comfort as a result of losing the bet. She in turn proposed to him, and he joyfully agreed. Later he called Passepartout and asked him to notify the church father about the wedding on the next day which is Monday. Immediately after, Passepartout leaves to get the appointment of clergymen but he could not find him at home. He spent around 20 minutes there. By 8.35 in the evening he reached back and told the master that their marriage is not possible tomorrow as tomorrow is Sunday and not Monday. And that day is Saturday. He told Fogg that he had made a mistake of one day in counting the days as they had traveled from the Eastward. He told him that they have arrived 24 hours before the time but now ten min (8.35 pm) were left to win the bet and to reach the Reform Club. So, Passepartout kidnaps his master by seizing his collar and dragging him with irresistible force.

2.Write 4 to 5 sentences on the 'Time' theme of the extract.

Or

Explain: Time is an important theme in this novel.

Ans- 'Time' is one of the important themes of the extract of the novel. Fogg had to complete his bet within 80 days. So it's a time-binding activity.

Fogg had to save his time to win the bet but he was delayed because of Fi, a detective. He arrested Fogg and due to this,he became late to reach London in time. He was trying to cover time, so Fogg arranged a special train to reach London from Liverpool. In the end, it was the time that helped Fogg to win his bet as he gained one day while crossing the International Date Line.

Some lines are showing the importance of time-

"The most important feature of this adventure novel is 'Time'."

"It illustrates repeatedly that time is fickle, and either works for or against them."

"The ultimate message is that no one cannot time; time will work the way it wants to work, and humans are at its mercy. "
