A. 1. Describe in your own words the incident when Hovstad's real intention to help Dr. Stockmann is exposed.
Ans- Initially Petra has a good opinion of Hovstad. She thinks that he is helping her father because her father is an honest and upright man.
However, when he says that he is doing it because Dr. Stockmann is Petra's father, he reveals his true Colors. He hints that one of the reasons he was supporting her father is to get on Petra's good side. When she gets angry, he tries to tell her that she must not speak so bitterly to him because her father needs his help. With this indirect emotional blackmail, Petra gets even angrier and leaves the office.
A 2. Write a character sketch of Dr. Stockmann.
Ans- Dr. Thomas stockman is the protagonist, hero, and main character of the play. He is a medical officer of the municipal baths and a family man. He is idealistic, emotional, and motivated by the truth. Dr. Stockmann has discovered that the Bath in the town are contaminated and wants to instruct the town to repair a close the Baths. He holds on to his findings and is ready to fight for the truth. When he realizes that Aslaksen and Hovstad are not going to publish his article, he is ready to spend his own money and print pamphlets. He is even willing to sacrifice his job for the truth.
Betrayed by his supporters and left alone, he does not admit defeat but instead strengthens his commitment to revealing the truth to the published at all costs. This displays his bravery to fight against all hours and his regulated nature. His wife believes he is a simpleton who can be easily duped. He is a true friend to the town and the community.
Finally, in his determination to expose the social evils of society, he is winning to put society's interest about his own which makes him come across as a truly noble character.
A.3 State and explain any two features of the play that distinguish it from a one-act play.
Number of Acts- ‘ An Enemy of the People’ is a play with more than one act. This is evident from the fact that the extract consists only of the third act. On the other hand, a one-act play, as the name suggests, has only one act.
Characters- the given play also has many characters like Dr. Stockmann, Peter, and Mrs.Stockmann. This is in contrast to a one-act play which consists of a limited number of characters.
Theme- the play deals with multiple these of always upholding the truth, focusing on the interests of society as opposed to self-interest, etc, a one-act play is typically centered around a single, dominant theme.
