A VISIT TO A MODEL VILLAGE
A VISIT TO A MODEL VILLAGE
PUNE: 5th January, 2021:
We had heard a lot about Hivare Bazar. It is small village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and faced acute water crisis in the 2005. Agriculture, the primary occupation, was suffering in village. This led to villagers migrating to the cities for work. Alcoholism was rampant. It was under these circumstances that Shri Popatrao Pawar an M.Com. Graduate was elected as Sarpanch of the village in early 90’s. With support from state, he brought about several changes. We reached the village and were surprised to see concrete road greeting us. There was green cover on the small hills surrounding the village.
We noticed that all houses had similar facade designs. All houses had an attached toilet and bathroom. There was a primary and secondary school Solar Street lights! We managed to get talking to a few women in the village. They seemed happy and satisfied about everything done by Gram Panchayat. People seemed happy and satisfied. However, the bright conclusions which could be drawn are mostly economic in nature. There are social ones too, but they seem to originate from economic success.
We enjoyed our short visit to village. We learnt many things from this education visit. We need to change our mindset before changing the village this lesson we learned from this visit.
