3. The Inchcape Rock

Appreciation-

About the Poem, Poet and Title-

The poem “The Inchcape Rock” was written by Robert Southy, and published in 1802. It is a story of the 14th century, having two main characters. The poem is a ballad means a narrative poem and contains 17 stanzas of four lines each.

The title ‘The Inchcape Rock’ is apt and suitable because it tells the story of the Inchcape Rock within didactic forms.

The poet Robert Southey was born in 1774 and died in 1843. He was a poet of Laureate of England from 1813 to 1843. His short poems ‘The Scholar’,’ The Battle of Blenheim’, Bishop Hatto’, and The Inchcape Rock” are very popular.

Theme-

This poem is based on the 14th-century story of the wicked Sir Ralph the Rover-a Sea pirate who removed the warning bell from the Inchcape Rock installed by the Abbot of Aberbrothrok. But on his return journey, in bad weather, his own ship hit with the same Rock as there was no warning sound of the bell. The poet gives us a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment. In short – “As you saw, so shall you reap”.

Poetic Style, device-

The poet has used picturesque description and a wonderful rhyme and rhythm in the poem. The rhyme scheme of this poem is ‘aabb’ and ‘green ocean’, ‘birds wheeling’, and ‘light waves’, etc add the beauty to the poem. Poetic devices such as Antithesis, apostrophe, Interrogative, synecdoche, Inversion, Onomatopoeia, personification, Alliteration, Repetition,  etc are effectively used.  for eg.

“Down sunk the Bell with a gurgling sound”

Onomatopoeia – The word ‘gurgling’ creates a sound.

Alliteration- The sound ‘s’ is repeated for poetic effect.

Special Features-

The poet has used Symbolism to present the good and the evil deeds in the poem. Abbot of Aberbrothok represents the Good whereas Sir Ralph the Rover is the symbol of Evil.

The poet also used an 'imagery' figure of speech to highlight the beauty of the poem. For eg

visual Imagery- "The Ship was as still as she could be" and

sound Imagery-"And over the waves, it's warning rung".

The poet has used many old English words also for eg. methinks, hath, Quoth, etc.

The Message of the poem-

The poem is written in the 18th century but still, the theme or message is universal and time boundless. It is a poem with a moral- “As you sow, so shall we reap” or “If you dig a pit for others, you are bound to fall into it”.

Your opinion -

I like this poem because of its simple usage of language and picturesque description. The story is very simple and gives a message about ‘Karma’ so always ‘do good things for others’ that message I learned from this poem.
