Q.4 A Statement of Purpose (SOP)-04 Marks

What is  a Statement of Purpose?

INTRODUCTION- 

SOP is one kind of an application as well as an essay.

Application-

It is an application made to University to seek admission to a particular course.

Essay-

It is an essay which describes you as a person, your aims and ambitions.

It speaks about your journey of life and the qualities you have nurtured in the process.

The score card or the transcript gives your academic achievement.

It is an objective but SOP gives an idea about your innate qualities and is subjective in nature.

Objective = innate qualities – Application

Subjective= in nature (details idea about your aim) – Essay

Importance of SOP-

1.It gives you an opportunity to show the special qualities which make you distinct from others.

2. It explains why you want to join the course.

3. What is your liking

4. How you have developed your liking

5. It justifies how you will be able to achieve your aim

6.  It also explains why you have selected a particular University.

Format of SOP

1st Paragraph= Introduction

Begin introducing your field of interest.

Talk about your personal background

Your aim in life.

Your mental make-up towards the course. 

How your interest arouses towards the course.

2nd Paragraph= Background

Why you wish to join specific course.

Academic information about your school/college.

Your area of interest.

3rd Paragraph= Aim, Skill, Interest….

Specify why you want to pursue this course.

Discourse the course curriculum.

Your abilities, skills, hobbies that are fit for this course.

Explain the skills you would enhance during this course.

4th   Paragraph= Experience & Career Goals

Industrial exposure or training experience that you have done.

State something that makes you distinct from other applicants.

Explain your long-term plans.

5th   Paragraph=Why this University

Specify the features of university that attracts you.

How the exposure in the university will help you in your career growth

6th    Paragraph=Conclusion

Sum up what you have written.

Ask for an opportunity in a polite manner.

Don't ask for any financial help. 

Points To Remember   -

Write the statement of purpose in clear and lucid language.

 Do not make spelling for construction mistakes.

 You should be convincing.

 Show determination in your career.

Your purpose of choosing this particular course and University should be in accordance with your career.

Last but not least, Remember that your personality is reflected through this so     highlight your qualities life experiences in such a way that your application should stand out from the rest.

Example-1

Q. 1.Example- Your hobby is climbing mountains you are physically and mentally fit. You have already claimed many mountains in India now your dream is to climb Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world that is why you want to join Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling to get proper training for it. Make a statement of purpose which will help you to get admission in the institute.

Last year when I was studying in the 11th standard I was reading English course book and while reading the book I read the lesson of Nepali-Indian Mountaineer, Tenzing Norgay lesson- On to the Summit: We Reach the Top. In that lesson he expressed how, he along with his fellow companion Edmund Hillary become successful on reaching the top of the mountain Mount Everest they were the first to individuals known to reach the Summit of Mount Everest.

I also belong to hilly area of Pune district after reading the story of Tenzing and Edmund Hillary. I also decided that I will become a successful mountaineer.

As a person from hilly area climbing is not new for me. i with my parents regularly climb the hill near by my village because my field is on the top of hill and we live at the foot heel as a child, I wandered with my friends on the hill to find various types of fruits and flowers.

 In school I used to play kho-kho it is my best game with the help of running and practice of kho kho my muscle is much stronger for mountaineering. I am fit for mountaineer.

In school my favourite subject was geography and I am interested to know about various types of mountains around the world. So, it is also useful to become mountaineer.

Your institute the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is one of the premier Mountaineering institutes in the world founded by Pandit Jawharlal Nehru to commemorate the first successful persons of the Mount Everest Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.

I hope your esteemed faculty will provide me that what I need like Tenzing I also want to become a successful mountaineer for that I want to learn additional things from your institute and that is why I want to take admission in your institute.
